Muchos Bustos
Position: Head of Fundraising
Hometown: the Shawnee Forest.
Derby wife? Bachelor.
Why this derby name and number? Bustos is my adopted last name and what the vast majority of my friends have been calling me for years, including "Busty (pronounced booo-sty)", and "Uncle Bustos." Muchos was added by the SoIL derby fam, as Bustos roughly translates from Spanish to equal a slang term which refers to a certain part of the female anatomy. I, personally, just don't get it.
How did you get into derby? I was officially obsessed when Hollywood aired the exploits of the Texas Roller Girls and made a reality show about them and derby. I thought the girls were incredibly hot, confident, tattoo-covered, full on bad-asses and wanted nothing more than to be one. When I visited Austin a year or two after the show ran its course, I actually met one of the lil gals at the hipster bar she worked at, long story short, so was she, and tiny, and I realized I totally COULD do derby. Well, living in So IL nothing of the sort was around, although there were constant rumors of starting something up. I believe I saw my first bout in St. Louis with none other than Dogfood and Groovie Ghoulie way back in the day....fast forward a ton and here we are today with our own league!!!!
Photo by Julie SwensonDrink of choice: When I need to relax-- micro brews: stouts, IPA's, APA's, pilsners, belgium wheats, as well as a good ole PBR. When I need to rehydrate-- water. When I need to wake up-- soy double latte's.
Non-derby hobbies: Writing music, playing in my band, singing, karaoke, knitting, sewing, cooking, writing letters, getting letters, sleeping in, growing plants/gardening, squacking at my chickens, building fires in my woodstove, chopping/stacking/drooling over very large piles of chopped wood, eating at awesome restaurants, sampling amazing micro-brews, traveling, collecting tiny little animal effigies-- either as figurines or as pictures-- my favorites? owls, birds, deer, squirrels, any forest life!, pretending to be super-organized, having a ridiculously worthless shoe obsession since I wear the same pair of combat boots or cowboy boots everywhere, receiving and giving thoughtful presents, Makanda Ball!!! (shout-out!), hiking all over the Shawnee forest, walking down rail-road tracks, swimming in lakes and cow ponds, fishing, old fashioned fish frys!, camping, being generally outdoors, sweaty and smelly.
Favorite song to skate to: I don't think I have just one in particular, but I love fast punk rock or metal (think Iggy Pop and the Stooges or Slayer) to skate to! While I dig so many different kinds of music, fast, rockin stuff really gets me going.
Turn ons: Funniness and a quick-wit, messy hair, stylish shoes (esp. on boys), musicians, love affairs with nature, presents, Willie Nelson, men that chop wood, ships, pirates, pirate ships, (ok so those are antiquated, romantic, and "Disnified" notions-- but you know what I mean), intelligence, honesty/loyalty, spontaneity, costumes, cowboys and the wild wild west, saturated colors, vinyl records, the sound of bells and chimes, empowered women, the smell of old books, 75* degrees (like, the weather), velvet paintings, beaches (sandy ones, not that stupid movie), LOTR fans, the attitude of the rooster, polaroid pictures, the ocean.
Turn offs: Deodorant, sweat pants in public, being interrupted, people who don't recycle, processed food, constant laziness, stagnation, predictability (not to be confused with perfectly acceptable structure and order), egotistical b.s. artists, people who are mean to innocent things and people, mean-ness in general, liars, cologne/perfume, people who say the word "tats," milk, bureaucracy, being told what to do, pet hair.
What do your family and friends think of derby? They love it, love that I am doing it, and are certainly not surprised I am doing it.
Favorite quote: "Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt." - Kurt Vonnegut, JR (RIP)
